In 1968 Tasmania’s second referendum since formation was held on the issue of gambling in the state. The Premier Eric Reece was unable to sustain a clear majority in cabinet and consequently a referendum was taken on the issue of gambling in the state with a yes vote of 58%, and consequently Tasmania became the first state in Australia to operate a casino.
Greg Farrell (Senior) and Gordon Barton acquired the Federal Group in 1969. Established in 1888, the Federal Group lay claim to being Australia’s oldest, and the worlds second oldest hotel chain.
The Federal Group is currently owned and operated by the Farrell Family, consisting of Greg Farrell (Managing Director), John Farrell (Director of Business Development), Julia Farrell (Director of Interior Design), Deborah Lee (Board Member, nee Farrell) and Jane Farrell (Board Member).
The development of the casino included the construction of the 17-storey hotel tower designed by renowned ground-breaking architect Sir Roy Grounds, a landmark that is nationally identified with Hobart, and to this day the 64-metre octagonal tower is still the city’s tallest building.
The building has been extended in recent years, including the conference centre which was opened in 1984, and the boardwalk in 1996.
