The Comfort and Sweetness of Peace
After the clouds, the sunshine,
after the winter, the spring,
after the shower, the rainbow,
for life is a changeable thing.
After the night, the morning,
bidding all darkness cease,
after life’s cares and sorrows,
the comfort and sweetness of peace.

I don’t have a photo but many will remebmer Peter Stevens ( Security Manager ) who died in an unfortunate boating accident. Peter was also Security Manager at Mindil Beach Hotel Casino R.I.P.

  2. peter bible (Federal Hotels Security Manager) says:

Peter Stevens was a member of the Tas. Police, when Wrest point opened, and he joined the staff at Wrest Point as a security officer under Jim Gleeson just when we opened.
I heard he had gone to N.T., but sadly I did not know he had passed.

  3. Virginia Harrison says:

I’m sure lots will remember Ken Harrison – from Security at Wrest Point and then Surveillance in Townsville and a lot of other places as well.
Unfortunately Ken passed away in 2004.

    • Graham Robey says:

I don’t know you, Virginia, but I remember Ken well from WP and liked him. He “guarded” me and many others when we carried floats and fills around the casino and was around if there was a bit of an issue. Nice bloke with a smile and a pleasant manner yet always professional.

  4. Lyn Bluett says:

Michael Gratton past away on Wednesday 4th August 2010.

    • joanne jeffrey says:

      Hi Lynn,
I am very sorry to hear about Mike.
It’s unnerving to see how many of our friends have gone.
      Joanne Jeffrey

  5. Lyn Bluett says:

Denis Garwood past away on 5th June 2011, he was a head cleaner at Wrest Point.

    • peter bible says:

Denis Garwood was a very loyal, honest and hard working cleaner at Wrest Point for many years.
When I joined the company in 1970 he was head cleaner at the old Wrest Point.
The number of times I saw him moving furniture around and re-setting rooms for functions well, you couldn’t count how many times.
I remember him well and I am very sorry to hear of his passing

      regards
      Peter Bible

I’m writing this on Mon 16th April. Ian Beveridge’s funeral is in Hobart today. I’m in the UK so, sadly, it’s not possible for me to be there. I first met Ian whilst working at WP in 1976 and I based myself at Ian’s house in Sandy Bay when I visited Tassie in 2000. When he stayed at my place in London a couple of years later Ian managed to immediately find valuable books in charity shops within half a mile of the house I’d lived in for 20 years!

We were always in touch over the years despite Ian’s aversion to email. I spoke to him around Xmas when he was already aware that he had only a short time to live. He was amazingly philosophical, which didn’t really surprise me. He was a person with great strength of character and a Scot to the core!

Ian Beveridge was one of the kindest, most thoughtful people I’ve ever met. It was a privilege to know him and I won’t be forgetting him in a hurry. Imperial Bookshop in Hobart is part of his legacy and a place where any other book-loving ex-WP staff might like to remember Ian.
    Roy
